Multimodal Medical Data and AI-Assisted Diagnosis
Worked on preprocessing and feature extraction for medical images and text, building a multimodal pipeline for assisted diagnosis research.

Background and problem
Medical data contains both images and text, and a single modality cannot cover the information a diagnosis requires. The research needed to align and clean both data types and extract usable features as input to assisted-diagnosis models.
Constraints
- Medical data is sensitive, so processing had to be completed within a controlled environment.
- Image quality and annotations are inconsistent, requiring unified preprocessing.
- Multimodal alignment depends on medical record timestamps and examination information.
Approach and architecture
The pipeline has four stages: data ingestion, preprocessing, feature extraction and alignment. Images are denoised, normalised and resized; text is structurally extracted; correspondences are then established by patient and by time.
Key decisions
- Standardised preprocessing: fix the image preprocessing parameters first so different batches are comparable.
- Layered features: low-level visual features and high-level semantic features are managed separately, making models easier to replace.
- De-identification first: remove identifiable information before analysis, keeping only the fields needed for research.
Results and measurement
Completed preprocessing and feature extraction for medical images and text, built a multimodal data processing pipeline, and provided a data foundation for subsequent assisted-diagnosis research.
Technical details
- Preprocessed medical images with size, channel and intensity normalisation.
- Cleaned, tokenised and extracted features from text, with unified sample alignment.
- Built an image/text feature fusion pipeline to support assisted-diagnosis research.
Reflection
The bottleneck in multimodal projects is often data alignment, not the model. If I did it again, I would establish a data dictionary and alignment rules before moving into modelling.
