Transformer / Llama Pre-training and Fine-tuning
Completed Transformer and Llama pre-training, fine-tuning and evaluation experiments; compared runs and studied RAG workflows.

Background and problem
I wanted to genuinely understand how large models are trained and fine-tuned, rather than only calling APIs. That required a controllable experimental environment that links data, training and evaluation, and can compare the impact of different hyperparameters.
Constraints
- Compute was limited, so experiments had to stay within what a single GPU could complete.
- Training took a long time, so experiments had to be interruptible and reproducible.
- Evaluation could not look at loss alone; task-level metrics were needed.
Approach and architecture
The experiments were split into three stages: data preparation, training/fine-tuning, and evaluation. Data was normalised into instruction or dialogue format, the training scripts supported configurable hyperparameters, and evaluation recorded both automatic metrics and manual spot-check results.
Key decisions
- Get it working small first: validate the pipeline with a small model and a small dataset before scaling up.
- Externalised configuration: hyperparameters and paths live in config files, and scripts are not hard-coded.
- RAG as a control: learn the retrieval-augmented route alongside fine-tuning and compare where each approach fits.
Results and measurement
Completed pre-training and fine-tuning experiments, producing reproducible training and evaluation scripts and recording performance differences across hyperparameters, laying a foundation for later large-model applications.
Technical details
- Managed experiments around the Transformer/Llama pre-training and fine-tuning pipeline.
- Compared evaluation results across hyperparameters such as learning rate, batch size and training steps.
- Mapped out the RAG pipeline of retrieval, context assembly and generation.
Reflection
The easiest thing to overlook in large-model experiments is evaluation. If I did it again, I would design the evaluation set and the manual scoring rubric before starting training.
